You don’t have to become the light of the world. You already are the light of the world, according to Jesus. It’s your identity. It’s just who you are now.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

~ Matthew 5:14-16 NIV

Jesus was speaking to his disciples – not just the twelve, but many more who were following him to hear his teachings. And he identified them all as the light of the world. It wasn’t just the professionals, the hired hands, the mega-talented, or the seminary trained. ALL of Jesus’ disciples are the light.

Because you are the recipient of God’s transforming grace, you shine brightly. You don’t have to start shining. You simply must not cover up who you are.

To put it differently, you are living, breathing, walking evidence of the power of the redemptive grace of God at work in a sinful human being. You’re a trophy of God’s handiwork. To see God work powerfully around you, all you have to do is to be and to share freely what God has done in you.

So don’t hide. Live openly. Share your life. Share your faith. Treat others with the grace with which God has treated you. Wear your relationship with Jesus on your sleeve, publicly and proudly. Be ready to give an answer when people ask you why you have such hope.

At the very moment that Jesus saved you, you lit up whether you realized it or not. Now simply let Jesus put you on display to fill your world with light and hope.
