It’s simple. You can do life your way, or God’s way. And only one of those ways yields the fruit you really want to experience.
Doing life your way is what we might call walking in the flesh. It means to live by your own rules, guided by your own wit, in your own will power, motivated by a desire for happiness and fulfillment, but with no guarantee that you’ll achieve either.
Doing life God’s way is what the Bible calls walking in the Spirit. It means to live by Jesus’ example, with the help of the Spirit’s power, motivated by a desire to know God and to live out his purposes.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
~ Galatians 5:16 NIV
When you follow Jesus’ example, letting the Holy Spirit guide your thinking, your feelings, and your decisions, you’ll wind up walking in close connection with our supernatural God. You’ll hear from him. You’ll know his presence. You’ll have the assurance that he’s there for you.
And if you want to overcome temptation and avoid sin, you can come up with a lengthy list of rules and standards to follow, but that approach has always been a point of failure for humans. Instead, walk in relational harmony with the Spirit and you’ll naturally resist those cravings.
Another translation words it this way:
As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self- life.
~ Galatians 5:16 TPT
