There is darkness, and there is light. And because of the existence of both Satan and sin, the world walks in darkness. Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers and people walk in darkness.
But light dispels darkness! When John, one of Jesus’ closest apostles, wrote his first letter to the church-at-large, he talked about the power of light and explained that God is the ultimate source of the light that this dark world needs.
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all… If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
– 1 John 1:5, 7 NIV
To walk in the light, we first need to understand what it means for God to be light. John says that there is literally no darkness in God at all. We know quite well what darkness looks like, so it’s a pretty powerful truth that God is perfectly holy, sinless, truthful, clean, and pure. He not only doesn’t sin, he can’t sin because of his holy nature. He is transcendent. In other words, he’s in a class by himself. He’s above sin.
Furthermore, God is light in that he is Truth. He speaks only truth. His truth dispels darkness. His truth ushers light into the shadowy corners of the human heart and the human race.
To walk in the light means to both hear and to apply his truth. Walking in the light means that I tune into what he has said and is saying with a willingness to put his words to work in my life so that I experience the difference between the darkness of the world and the light of his guidance and blessing.
John said that when we walk in the light, we share a bond with others who also walk in the light, and we enjoy the purifying power of Jesus’ blood. If you want to be clean, to be close to God, to be blessed by God, it’s a matter of doing two things consistently in your life.
And everything else will fall in line.
