It’s possible for us, as humans, to cultivate attitudes of love toward other people. We do that in marriage. We do that in parenting. And we do that with friends and neighbors. The problem is, our love always has limits.

While we certainly hope for better, it’s always possible, because of sin, that the person in the world we believe least likely to turn on us or hurt us can do just that.

Jesus experienced this. He was born into his own nation of people and they rejected him. The whole world rejected him. The people who praised him on Sunday cried out “Crucify him!” a few days later.

Our love can be very strong, but it can’t overcome the very worst of human nature.

God’s love, on the other hand, can be truly infinite and limitless. Every single one of us has, can, and will rebel against the standards of our holy and loving Creator. We’ve all gone our own way, like stubborn sheep.

God sees the very worst side of humanity, but no matter how sinful, how wicked, how awful our deeds may become, he never, ever stops relentlessly pursuing us with his love. The Scripture puts it this way:

Who could ever separate us from the endless love of God’s Anointed One? Absolutely no one! For nothing in the universe has the power to diminish his love toward us. Troubles, pressures, and problems are unable to come between us and heaven’s love. What about persecutions, deprivations, dangers, and death threats? No, for they are all impotent to hinder omnipotent love, even though it is written: All day long we face death threats for your sake, God. We are considered to be nothing more than sheep to be slaughtered! Yet even in the midst of all these things, we triumph over them all, for God has made us to be more than conquerors, and his demonstrated love is our glorious victory over everything!

Romans 8:35-37 TPT

And Jesus Culture wrote their song, One Thing Remains, with this truth in mind:

Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant through the trial and the change
One thing remains,
Yes, one thing remains.

Your love never fails,
It never gives up
It never runs out on me

Because on and on, and on, and on it goes
Before it overwhelms and satisfies my soul
And I never ever have to be afraid
One thing remains
So, this one thing remains.

Your love never fails,
It never gives up
It never runs out on me
