I recently wrote about walking in the Spirit, but I love the way that Paul gets more specific with a picture of what that looks like day to day. He says,

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

~ Galatians 5:25 NIV

When I was a kid, I looked up to my grandfather and wanted to be just like him. He used to let me help carry things from his barn to his workshop and our workday started early when dew was still on the grass. My grandmother describes looking out the kitchen window and seeing him walk at his usual pace across the field while I followed right behind him, looking down at the grass and intentionally planting each foot in the dew marks left by his.

I was matching steps with him because I wanted to be just like him. I wanted to end up wherever he ended up.

When you’re trying to be godly, and the word godly really means “like God” or “like Christ,” the very best thing you can do is match his steps.

Read the gospels and see how Jesus lived his life. Learn to make decisions the way he did, to love people the way he did, to share your faith the way he did.

Walking with the Spirit is the big goal, and the small daily goal to get you there is to match his steps.
