Can we really “end” poverty? Isn’t it just an impossible and idealistic goal?

When I served as one of the Pastors at Saddleback Church, we would often talk about taking down the five “global giants,” which include spiritual emptiness, self-serving leadership, disease, illiteracy, and of course, poverty. And while the problem of extreme poverty is, indeed, giant, I believe it’s possible to attack it head-on and make an actual and powerful difference, one family and one community at a time.

An estimated 9.2 percent of the global population still lives below the international poverty line (IPL) of US$1.90 a day, which represents the typical poverty line of some of the poorest economies in the world. This percentage amounts to 689 million extreme poor…

Perhaps one reason we have lost faith in this cause is that we’ve only seen it approached in ways that aren’t truly productive. If we’re going to actually end poverty, we have to empower people to be difference-makers in their own communities. As Desmond Tutu said,

There comes a point where we need to stop pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.

That’s why I’m so excited to join the team at Help One Now as a Donor and Partnerships Advocate.

Help One Now empowers families in developing countries through high-capacity local leaders with proven solutions to end extreme poverty. We do this in 3 main ways: empowering families to launch businesses, providing students with access to high-quality education, and providing restorative care for children in vulnerable circumstances. Our work serves 8 different countries and have countless stories of real impact and change.

Our CEO, Chris Marlow, wrote an excellent book about how Doing Good is Simple, and he says,

We were never called just to be a people who believe in certain theological outcomes and attend worship gatherings that teach us more and more about Jesus. Rather, we were called to live out our faith in the highways and byways of society, where love seeps into the hardness of hearts and melts away suffering, pain, and heartbreak—where good overcomes evil and love conquers all.

I can get really excited about that! In fact, I can give my whole life to creating opportunities for good to overcome evil and for love to conquer all!

So, how can you get involved? I would love to personally answer that question! Fill out this short form and click “Tell Me More!” and I will reach out to start a conversation with you!

YES!!!! I want to have a personal conversation about how I and/or my church or business can empower families in developing countries through high-capacity local leaders with proven solutions to end extreme poverty!
