Which is it? That the world has gone crazy and everything is bad? Or that the world is at peace because God is in control?
Perhaps the answer is a bit of both.
God made a perfectly peaceful paradise and offered it as a gift to be stewarded by mankind. Then… sin. Pain. Suffering. Corrosion. And corruption. Oppression. Injustice.
The human race has proven, over and over, our inability to govern and manage God’s creation well, whether we’re talking about nature itself or nations of people in need of good governing. And then there is the fact that Satan himself has some measure of governing authority over the systems of our broken world, at least for a season.
But as a Christian, here is something I believe because of how clearly it is laid out in Scripture.
The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
~ Psalm 93:1 NIV
God reigns. And he is armed with strength.
And therefore, indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
God created a perfect world that was marred by the sinfulness of humanity, and God will correct it. He’ll renovate it all by a fiery purging and reset it to its original, pristine condition. In the meantime, he allows evil to persist because of his patience and willingness to wait longer for more and more people to hear the redemptive truth of the gospel.
And God’s Kingdom is sprouting up around and amongst those who live in this world to spread that good news, to share the hope and infinite optimism of a people governed by a very good King regardless of who may sit on any earthly throne.
