One of the more common questions I get to address with pastors and church leaders that I’m coaching is this: what’s the difference between a mission statement and a vision statement?

The answer depends on who you’re talking to, to some degree, but here’s my take…

To re-cap:

  • Your church’s mission is unchanging. It was set by Jesus in the Great Commission and Great Commandment.
  • Your church’s vision is contextual. It’s about how to fulfill the mission in your culture and community today.

And as Pastor Rick Warren always says, where there is no vision, people find another parish.
