This Little Moment is Gone

Tunnel Vision

There are moments in life that slip by and then they’re gone forever. This past week, my son Sam turned one year old, so we threw a little party for him at a park in Laguna Beach.

At the park, there was a little system of tunnels for kids to crawl through made from concrete culverts and a mound of dirt. I was walking just ahead of Sam and decided to run ahead and catch him through the tunnel. He peered through the tunnel at me just as I readied my iphone for a shot. Then he was off to something else. That moment is gone. It’s preserved in a photograph, but I’ll never re-live it.

Sometimes that thought needs to hit us – before we throw away a relationship, before we choose our career over our family, before we allow all the little moments to rush by, un-enjoyed.

This moment is already passed. Was it worth it?

Thanks Brandon.  I think it is healthy to widen one’s perspective.  The old saying you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, comes to mind.   Perhaps we can learn something from imagining that it is not only gone forever, that no similar event or experience is ever to be repeated.  If you could go back would you live it more vividly, would you treasure it more.  Life is now should we be more present.  If we only get out what we put in, are we playing full on, relax more deeply.  If this was your last chance to show your love, last chance to impart a lesson, last chance to show you really cared, how would you turn up.  Would you be more grateful.  What is it in you that holds you back, drop the false barriers, be brave, every moment is another moment gone, you have nothing to loose by living life fully.  Good memories from the past may be missed, but you can usually create more good ones.  Imagine looking back having robbed yourself and those you loved the many moments when you weren’t really there for them, years lost and they have grown away from you. All that matters is what you’ve shared with those you’ve loved, the connections you’ve made and what you have left to pass on (impact on environment, lessons passed to others etc).  It’s never too late to touch someone, to set an example, lift them, teach them a lesson.  You only have now.
