“…for thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”—Joshua 1:8

We all have our heroes. They are people we look to for strength and direction. We follow their examples with high hopes of seeing just a measure of their success. One of my heroes has been dead for over 3,000 years, but his life continues to make a tremendous impact even today. His name is Joshua. He served as personal assistant to Moses and upon Moses’ death, was charged with the responsibility of leading the children of Israel into the completion of their journey to the land of promise.

Joshua followed in the footsteps of a spiritual giant, Moses. Moses had emancipated the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, had written the Torah, and had given a broken people a renewed national identity. When the people questioned his faith, Moses pressed on. He was a leader with real grit. Needless to say, Joshua had big shoes to fill. That’s why I love the way the Lord ministered to him from the outset of his ministry. He immediately confers a special title upon Joshua… “Winner!”

Do you notice that God wanted Joshua to begin his tenure of leadership with a winning attitude? More than that, God wanted Joshua to live up to a winning identity. His promise will be Joshua’s constant source of encouragement during the conquest and distribution of the promised land… “You will win! You will have success! Have courage!”

God promises success to His children today as well, at least His own brand of success. Just listen to His good word through Paul to us today, “being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) So take His promise of success and run with it! Go for the gold today and remember God’s spirit of conquest is on your side.
