How to Go from “Poor Me” to “Praise God”

Difficulties are inevitable. Job, who suffered far more than most people will ever endure said, “People are born for trouble as readily as sparks fly up from a fire.” (Job 5:7 NLT)

You can’t control the weather, the stock market, or the decisions other people make. But there is something you can control… you must control, regardless of your circumstances.

Your attitude.

This is one of those basic principles we teach our kids but forget in our own adulthood. It’s possible to take every single one of our thoughts captive. It’s possible, because of how we were created, to be intentional in our thinking. In fact, it’s the only real path to joy.

Consider my good friend, Bill, who is dealing with stage four cancer, again…

Or consider the people of Belize. My wife and some other leaders at Grace Hills recently traveled there on a mission trip to assess some spiritual and physical needs. But the people of Belize kept serving and blessing our team, taking care of them and offering them precious gifts.

Some people are buried under their circumstances while other climb on top of their circumstances to have a better platform from which to witness to the goodness of God.

Self-pity is a terrible, infectious disease. It creeps into all that we do and spoils the fruit before it has a chance to ripen.

So, get back to the basics today.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

I Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV

How do you quickly change from “poor me” to “praise him?”

  • Own your attitude. It’s all yours to manage.
  • Think positively and hopefully. Ask yourself, “how should I be thinking through this situation?”
  • Speak it. Out loud. Repeat it.
  • Believe it. Fight for it!
  • Share it. Write it. Blog it
  • Sing it. Pray it. Shout it!

This IS God’s will – that you praise him.

This IS God’s will – that you remain hopeful and thankful in ALL circumstances.

This IS God’s will – that you rejoice (choose joy) continually.
